SWIM

A high-seas R&B ballad about choosing to keep moving, at your own pace.

The story

SWIM marks BTS's first group single in six years, arriving after the seven members completed mandatory military service. Big Hit Music announced the comeback on January 4, 2026; on January 15 the album title ARIRANG was revealed, nodding to the Korean folk song. On March 3 the tracklist landed with track seven highlighted in black: SWIM, the lead single.

According to a press release, the song "centers on the resolve to keep swimming onward through life's many tides. Rather than resisting the current, the song frames the choice to move ahead at one's own pace as an expression of love for life itself."

Jimin framed it this way in a Spotify message to fans: If the album speaks about our roots and deep emotions, SWIM represents present, where we are right now. I think this track marks the beginning of a whole new chapter for BTS.

Timeline

    Production

The members ran songwriting sessions in Los Angeles in summer 2025 alongside a producer roster that includes Diplo, Kevin Parker (Tame Impala), Mike WiLL Made-It, and Ryan Tedder. SWIM itself sits as a mid-tempo R&B cut, leaning on layered vocal harmonies from RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook.

    The music video

Directed by Tanu Muiño and shot against the Atlantic backdrop of Lisbon, the SWIM video puts BTS aboard a working sailing ship — the good ship ARIRANG — with Riverdale's Lili Reinhart appearing alongside the group. It dropped to YouTube on March 20, 2026 and crossed 5 million views inside an hour while trending #1 in 70 countries.

    Performances

BTS debuted SWIM live at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul on March 21, 2026 for the free BTS The Comeback Live | ARIRANG show, livestreamed on Netflix to a crowd reported in the hundreds of thousands. Its U.S. TV debut came on March 25 at the Guggenheim Museum for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. A separate live performance video was filmed at Sunhyewon, a historic hanok, and the song became a fixture in the setlist of the Arirang World Tour, which opened April 9, 2026.

    Lyrics — opening

This is how it all begins
    Swim, swim
I just wanna dive, I just wanna dive

    Splash, drift
I make waves with my two fins
    Splash, drip
I just wanna take it across the line
Under here, we don't chase the time
Baby, everything can't be so sad
Turn my face from the land
I just wanna dive, I just wanna dive
